2022 AFCON QUALIFICATION: Yobo Says This Is A Proud Moment To Be A Nigerian’

Joseph Yobo believes that this is a proud moment to be a Nigerian following the Super Eagles’ qualification for the African Cup of Nations which will hold in Cameroun next year.

Paul Onuachu’s last-gasp header precisely in the 93rd minute earned Nigeria a 1-0 win over the Republic of Benin in Saturday’s keenly contested tie at the Stade Charles de Gaulle.

The Nigerian national team, however, did not look that competitive against Benin Republic because they had already secured their ticket to Cameroon 2022 even before the kick-off.

Hours before the Super Eagles took on the Squirrels in Porto-Novo, the three-time African champions were hoping for a win or a draw to qualify for the next African Cup of Nations.

However, Lesotho’s 0-0 draw with Sierra Leone earned Gernot Rohr’s men an early ticket even before kick-off against the Beninoise and that changed the total complexion of the game.

Yobo, former Super Eagles skipper who is now an assistant coach to the team’s technical adviser, Rohr is still over the moon following the team’s qualification for the 2022 AFCON.

“Big congratulations to the Super Eagles for the well-deserved victory and also for qualifying for the AFCON 2022. Solid team performance and another clean sheet away from home.

“Proud moment,” the former Everton and Fenerbahce defender who made a total of 101 international appearances for the Nigerian national team said while displaying great happiness.
