Mario Mandzukic’s return to European football is official. After seven months in Qatar and half a year without a club, the 34-year-old Croatian is moving back to Italy and joins AC Milan.
The Rossoneri announced the transfer to Serie A on Tuesday, followed a little later by a confirmation on the club’s official channels. Mandzukic receives a contract until the end of the season with an option for another year, which is dependant on appearances and qualifying for the Champions League.
The former Bayern Munich and Atlético forward already played in the Italian top flight for Juventus between 2015 and 2020.
Together with Zlatan Ibrahimovic, he now forms a 73-year-old strike partnership at the league leaders.
Most recently, the Croatian was playing for Al-Duhail SC, but dissolved the contract after only seven competitive matches (one goal) in the summer.
According to Gazzetta dello Sport, AC Milan directors Paolo Maldini and Frederic Massara initially hesitated to sign Mandzukic, as other options on the transfer market were examined. With a market value of €2.5 million, Mandzukic ranked among the 15 most valuable free agents.
