AFCON Qualifiers Top Scorer: Osimhen Seeking To Emulate Ighalo, Ike Uche

Napoli forward Victor Osimhen will be pushing to start again this evening when the Super Eagles face the Crocodiles of Lesotho in their dead rubber 2022 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying tie at the Teslim Balogun stadium, Lagos as he is seeking to end the qualification series as the top scorer.

Two of his predecessors, Ikechukwu Uche and Odion Ighalo were crowned top scorers on the road to the 2013 and 2019 Africa Cup of Nations respectively and Osimhen, joint top scorer in the 2022 qualifying series with four goals will be hoping to start and score this evening.

Uche was joint top scorer on the road to the 2013 AFCON with three goals and Nigeria would go on to win the tournament proper with Emmanuel Emenike and Ghana’s Wakaso Mubarak emerging top scorers with four goals each.

Six years later after Nigeria failed to qualify for the next two editions, Ighalo emerged the stand alone top scorer with his seven goals. The former Manchester United player would later go on to score five more in the tournament proper to also emerge the goaleador.

Osimhen scored twice in the 4-2 defeat of Lesotho when both countries first clashed at the Setsoto Stadium in Maseru on Matchday 2 of the qualifiers in November 2019 and the former Lille of France forward should feel confident of scoring his first ever hat-trick for the Super Eagles in what would be his 10th game for Nigeria.
