Amazing Man City run now 20 wins in a row

Man City made it a remarkable 20 consecutive wins in all competitions with a 2-1 victory over West Ham United on Saturday.

It’s now 27 matches unbeaten for Pep Guardiola’s side, with their last defeat coming on November 21 to Tottenham Hotspur.

Man City’s record in the last 27 games reads: Won 24. Drawn 3. Lost 0.

And in that period, the Cityzens have scored 63 and conceded just eight.

It also puts to bed a somewhat confusing statistical debate. Man City managed a 20-game winning run in 2017 – but that sequence of results included a penalty shootout win over Wolves.

Some leading statisticians do not recognise shootout successes as wins, and therefore Man City’ 15th straight victory on this current stretch was widely heralded as a new English football record.

But Guadiola’s men have now managed 20 wins without the need for a shootout, meaning there can be no question what the longest competitive winning streak by an English top-flight team is.

Man City’s 20 wins in a row is six more than the previous record of 14, which Preston managed in 1892 and Arsenal equalled in 1987.

The result means City are now 13 points clear at the top of the table, although Manchester United and Leicester will both have the chance to reduce the gap to 10 when they play later this weekend.
