Benzema has now scored 77 goals since the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo

Karim Benzema came to Real Madrid’s rescue once again on Saturday, heading home an equaliser against Elche before then going on to score a stoppage-time winner.

Those two goals take him up to 20 in all competitions, and this is the third consecutive season in which he has hit the 20-goal mark.

In 2018/19 Benzema netted 30 goals and then he followed that up in 2019/20 with 27, so he still has two and a half months to beat his record from last season.

Benzema became Real Madrid’s main attacking threat after the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo in 2018, which has since seen him go on to score 77 goals. He has been Los Blancos’ undisputed top scorer in the last three seasons.

What is noticeable is just how far ahead the 33-year-old is to his Real Madrid teammates in terms of goals, as the second-top scorer is Casemiro with six goals, 14 behind the No.9.

It is only down to Benzema’s exploits that Real Madrid are somehow still in the title race. He has five goals in the last four games he has played, and in the last seven he has only failed to score in two of them: against Levante and Huesca.

Benzema was named man of the match after his brace against Elche and he admitted afterwards that he still has his eyes on top spot, with Los Blancos six points behind leaders Atletico Madrid.

“The victory was the work of the whole team,” Benzema told Movistar.

“It wasn’t an easy game because Elche were well organised in defence. The teams that come here drop deep and it’s difficult for us to create chances.

“We know we have to give more to get to the top spot, but with courage we pushed forward.”
