Arsenal’s bid for a record extending 15th FA Cup win was halted at the St Mary’s stadium where a strong Southampton side knocked the holders out of the competition at the fourth-round stage courtesy of a first-half own goal.
The Saints were rewarded for their attacking intent in the opening period when Gabriel turned in Kyle Walker-Peters’ cross in the 24th minute.
It was the first goal Arsenal had conceded in 508 minutes as they suffered a first loss in seven matches.
Southampton will face another Premier League side, Wolves, in the next round.
Arsenal are 14-time winners of the competition followed by Manchester United who have won it 12 times and can make it 13 if they overcome Liverpool on Sunday at Old Trafford, make it to the final and win. Chelsea and Tottenham, who are still both in the competition have won the cup eight times each.
