Lionel Messi’s bid to become second on the list of footballers with the most titles in the history of the sport was thwarted by Athletic Bilbao who defeated Barcelona 3-2 in the final of the SuperCopa on Sunday.
Messi has won 36 titles to date, and is just one short of drawing level with Andres Iniesta and Maxwell, who both have 37. He is six short of Dani Alves, who has won 42 titles.
The Argentine has won ten La Liga titles with Barcelona, in addition to eight Supercopa de Espana titles, six Copa del Reys, four Champions Leagues, three European Super Cups and three Club World Cups. With his country Messi has won the U-20 World Cup and an Olympic gold medal.
Messi is currently level with Ryan Giggs, one ahead of Kenny Daglish, two ahead of Gerard Pique and Vitor Baia, three ahead of Xavi and four ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo.
