Cristiano Ronaldo to Man City could ‘upset others’ as £53m contract details emerge | Football | Sport

Manchester City could risk upsetting a number of the club’s existing high-profile stars if they decide to meet Cristiano Ronaldo’s exorbitant wage demands, according to reports. The defending Premier League champions are looking to bring the Juventus forward to the Etihad Stadium ahead of next week’s transfer deadline after failing to secure the services of Tottenham striker Harry Kane.

The capture of a new attacking talisman has been high on Pep Guardiola’s list of priorities since the beginning of the summer transfer window.

The Spaniard finds himself with just one natural striking option in Gabriel Jesus following the departure of Sergio Aguero, who joined Barcelona on a free transfer back in May.

City pushed hard to land Kane but were ultimately thwarted by the reluctance of Spurs chairman Daniel Levy to part ways with his prized asset.

The Manchester heavyweights have switched their focus to Ronaldo as a result, with a move said to be in the works.

However, there will be plenty of obstacles to overcome between now and Tuesday’s deadline in order to bring the mercurial 36-year-old back to the Premier League.

Ronaldo’s salary is likely to represent a major sticking point, with the Juventus man looking to receive around £510,000 per week, according to The Sun.

The report claims that such a deal would make him City’s highest earner by some distance, a development with the potential to ‘upset others’ in the dressing room.

Kevin de Bruyne is currently the club’s best-paid player, with the Belgian maestro taking home around £385,000 per week.

The 30-year-old is followed by Raheem Sterling on £300,000 per week, with John Stones and Jack Grealish pocketing £250,000 per week and £230,000 per week respectively.

It is said that City are willing to pay the full amount requested by Ronaldo, which amounts to £53million over the course of a two-year contract.

Club chiefs are said to be concerned that a move could potentially lead to resentment across the rest of Guardiola’s squad.

It remains to be seen whether City will be able to strike an agreement for Ronaldo before the summer transfer window draws to a close, with just five days remaining for clubs to do business.

Juventus have reportedly asked for a fee of around £24m, but their Premier League counterparts would prefer to agree a free transfer.

Ronaldo is wholly on board with the move and has informed the Italian outfit of his desire to leave the club this month, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.

The five-time Ballon D’Or winner’s agent, Jorge Mendes, is understood to be discussing contract terms with City and there appears to be a willingness from all parties to find a solution.

Juventus have previously underlined a desire to keep hold of Ronaldo, but the club’s hierarchy are aware that shifting his lucrative salary from their books would be a smart decision.

It seems as though the wheels could soon be put in motion if City manage to reach a compromise with Ronaldo’s current employers over the coming days.
