The young Brit shocked the tennis world when she became the first qualifier in history to win a Major, coming into the tournament ranked down at No 150 in the world and winning ten matches in a row without dropping a set en route to the title.
Meanwhile, Medvedev halted Novak Djokovic’s chances at making history, beating the Serb 6-4 6-4 6-4 in the final as Djokovic was looking to become the first man in 52 years to win the Calendar Grand Slam, while the title also would have also been a record 21st for a male singles player at Grand Slam level.
It was the Russian’s third Major final, as he came from two-sets-down to force a fifth against Nadal at the US Open back in 2019 before losing, and suffered a straight-sets defeat to Djokovic in the Australian Open final at the start of the year.
Both he and Raducanu were also unable to repeat their Flushing Meadows title wins in the Californian desert this week.
