Dillian Whyte has told talkSPORT that he hopes Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury’s proposed blockbuster heavyweight showdown falls through so he gets his shot at a world title.
Whyte has put himself back into the heavyweight title picture after reclaiming the WBC interim belt on Saturday night in Gibraltar with a superb victory over Alexander Povetkin to avenge his devastating defeat to the Russian last year.
And ‘The Body Snatcher’ has admitted he wants that two-fight mega deal to fall through, with no confirmation on a date or a venue yet.
“I would love to fight Fury and Joshua. Everyone’s saying the fight is made, but there’s not a certainty,” he said on Monday’s Drive.
“It’s not done and dusted. Usually when a fight is confirmed you get a date, the venue… there’s nothing like out there.
“All that’s out there is Joshua and Fury have signed [an agreement] to fight each other, that doesn’t mean to say the fight will happen.
“Let’s hope it falls through and I can fight one of them for the world title.”
The British heavyweight admitted he was yearning for a first-round knockout over veteran Povetkin, who stunned the Brixton-born fighter with a brutal uppercut in August 2020.
“I only made minor adjustments [from the first fight], as I know how strong and how powerful I am,” Whyte explained.
“Listen, I believed in myself. I knew I could do that [to Povetkin]. I was disappointed not to do it earlier.
“I was trying to knock him out in the first round, but obviously he’s a big, strong guy and very experienced.
“I set about him in the first round and I was disappointed I didn’t finish him in the first round, but because he’s so dangerous and tricky I had to calm myself down, relax and take a backwards step. I had to be smart and stick to the game plan.”
