Jefferson Lerma gave Crystal Palace the lead against Chelsea in Monday’s Premier League clash and he did so in stunning fashion.

The Colombian midfielder picked the ball up deep in the Blues half after Moises Caicedo stumbled and he unleashed an unstoppable long-range distance past Petrovic on the half hour mark.

The strike drew huge praise from football fans on social media, with some claiming it was ‘an absolute beauty’.

‘That strike by Lerma was an absolute beauty,’ one fan wrote on X, while a second said, ‘Stunning goal by Lerma’.

A third fan added: ‘Lerma with one of the worst shot attempts in Premier League history followed ten seconds later by a screamer obviously’.

Another was left amazed by Lerma’s strike, saying: ‘Wow. Wow. Wow. That was pure class from Jefferson Lerma. What a beauty’.

Meanwhile, former Blues goalkeeper Petr Cech believes Petrovic could have done better to save the shot.

Speaking on Sky Sports, he said: ‘Petrovic drops to the goalline to have a little bit more time to step and push. But you can step up, gain a yard and close the angle.

‘He had a very good step and push but couldn’t get there. Personally, I would be higher and have a better chance. I think a small touch would have been enough.’

Former Liverpool and Fulham midfielder Danny Murphy was also quick to react, claiming it’s the best goal he has seen this season.

Speaking on talkSPORT, he said: ‘I’m not sure I’ve seen a better strike than that this season.

‘That is an absolute rocket.’

Lerma’s strike came against the run of play after Chelsea had much of the ball without threatening to get in behind.
