Fernando Alonso: I’m better than the other F1 drivers

Despite spending the last two seasons away from Formula 1, Fernando Alonso has not lost any of the confidence that helped him become a double world champion.

Last racing for McLaren in 2018, the now 39-year-old Alonso has taken part in, and won, the World Endurance Championship, as well as the 24 Hours of Le Mans, but now finds himself back in F1 with Alpine.

It’s going to be great,” Alonso told the BBC. “I’m looking forward [to it].

“There were some young talented guys who have been showing great performance in the younger categories, and then we still have the champions, that were here two years ago with Lewis [Hamilton], Sebastian [Vettel], Kimi [Raikkonen].

“Verstappen, even if he is one of the young ones and the younger generation, he is racing at the top level for already four or five years. We have a competitive grid and it’s going to be a challenge to beat everyone on track.”

When asked if he is as good as he aforementioned drivers, Alonso replied: “No, I’m better.”

In the build up to the 2021 F1 season, Fernando Alonso was involved in a cycling accident, in which he was knocked over by a car near his home in Switzerland, and he now has metal plates in his jaw.

“I was lucky at the end,” Alonso said. “It will not be compromised, at all, my season, and as I said, I feel lucky.”
