Premier League transfer rumours: Newcastle set sights on Chris Wood

Georginio Wijnaldum is reportedly open to a return to the Premier League as Arsenal ‘accelerate’ their interest in the Paris Saint-Germain star.

The 31-year-old joined the French side in the summer as a free agent from Liverpool, but he has found himself on the fringes of Mauricio Pochettino’s side.

He has scored three goals in 20 appearances for PSG, but the Dutchman has only managed ten starts for his new club as he competes for a place in the middle of the park with Marco Verratti, Danilo Pereira, Leandro Parades, Ander Herrera and Idrissa Gueye.

And Wijnaldum is keen on coming back to England to find regular playing time with Arsenal and Newcastle among the teams interested, according to Sky Sports.

Should Arsenal make a move for Georginio Wijnaldum? Comment below

The Gunners are looking to add reinforcements in January as Mikel Arteta looks to secure a Champions League place.

The Magpies are also in desperate need of additions but – at the opposite end of the table – they are embroiled in a relegation battle.

Eddie Howe has a sizeable transfer budget to work with this month following the club’s Saudi-led takeover and are keen on Wijnaldum, who enjoyed a successful spell at St James Park before moving to Liverpool.

A loan deal has been touted, but this is a proposition PSG are reportedly against as they stand firm on a short-term transfer.

A permanent move is not out of the equation, however, but it would cost any potential suitor in the region of £15million, according to Fichajes.

Wijnaldum said in October that he was “not completely happy” in Paris due to his lack of playing time.

He told Dutch news outlet NOS: “I can’t say I’m completely happy, because the situation is not what I wanted.

“But that’s football and I’ll have to learn to deal with that. I’m a fighter. I have to stay positive and work hard to turn it around.

“I have played a lot in recent years, was always fit and also did very well. This is something different and that takes getting used to.

“I was really looking forward to the new step and then this happens. It is very difficult.”

Arteta has admitted that Arsenal are “open” to doing a big deal in this window.

“If it’s the right player, we can afford and we can do want we want to do, we will discuss it and come to the best possible decision. We are open,” he said.

“I think with the amount of things and the way we want to evolve the squad, we have to maximise every window in many different ways.

“We are alert. (Technical director) Edu and his team are working very hard because we know exactly what we need to do.

“Whether we can accomplish that in January or the summer is a different question and related to lots of other stuff but we are there.”
