Fabio Capello believes Kylian Mbappé and Erling Braut Haaland are future Ballon d’Or winners and Alessandro Costacurta predicts ’10 to 15 years of fun’.
After Paris Saint-Germain forward Mbappé’s hat-trick against Barcelona on Tuesday, Dortmund star Haaland followed up with three goals against Sevilla last night.
The impressive stats in the Champions League prompted discussions among pundits all across the world and comparisons with the rivalry between Barcelona talisman Lionel Messi and Juventus hero Cristiano Ronaldo.
Haaland helped the discussion of a direct rivalry by admitting Mbappé’s hat-trick had inspired him ahead of the match against Sevilla on Wednesday.
And Costacurta, Alessandro Del Piero, and Capello all agreed that the attacking duo have ‘a fantastic future’ in European football.
“In the Champions League, he [Haaland] has scored 18 goals in 13 games and 43 goals in 40 games with Dortmund,” Former Milan defender Costacurta said.
“Tuesday night Mbappé, Wednesday Haaland. I think we will have another 10-15 years of fun.
“On Wednesday, he faced one of the best young defenders in Europe, [Jules] Kounde. He swept him away and that is scary. If he wipes out the best prospects…”
Former Juventus star Del Piero added that the modern style of football leads to ‘more goals’ but is still impressed by the end product from the two superstars.
“Records are made to be beaten,” Del Piero said. “There is a football that leads to playing more and scoring more.
“But you have to do it and the numbers of this guy [Haaland] are impressive.”
Capello sees room for further improvement and thus predicts a bright future for them both.
“They are young and still have a lot to develop, they have a fantastic future, they will be the ones fighting for the Ballon d’Or.
“In terms of pure quality, Neymar is superior, but the power and speed of Haaland is devastating.
“Haaland, compared to Mbappé, knows how to unmark, he knows how to go deep and asks for a one-two.
“In this aspect, he has something more, but Mbappé is technically stronger. Haaland always makes the right moves to attack the target.”
