Iheanacho Set To Break Another Didier Drogba Record In England

Barely weeks after jumping ahead of Chelsea and Ivory Coast legend Didier Drogba as the highest scoring African in the FA Cup in England, Nigerian international forward Kelechi Iheanacho is set to break another record belonging to the Ivorian.

Iheanacho’s brace in Leicester City’s 3-1 demolition of Manchester United last month in the quarterfinal of the FA Cup took his tally in the competition to 13 from 18 matches, one more than Drogba whose 12 goals was spread across nine seasons in 29 games.

A repeat of his brace against Southampton Sunday evening at Wembley stadium will take the Nigerian’s tally to 15 which will make him the top scoring African in domestic cup competitions in England.

The former Manchester City striker has scored eight times in 15 League Cup games which brings his goal tally to 21,one behind Drogba who scored 10 times in eight appearances in the competition.

With nine goals in his last six games, Iheanacho looks poised to achieve that feat with fewer number of games than the illustrious Ivorian.

Iheanacho has featured eight times against Southampton since he scored twice in Manchester City’s 4-2 loss at the St Mary’s in May 2016.

The Nigerian has won four times, drew twice and lost twice against this evening’s Foxes’ foes at Wembley.

He has scored thrice with all coming in the Premier League.

Today’s tie will be Iheanacho’s first against Southampton in the FA Cup but second in a domestic cup competition after starting for 61 minutes in his club’s 6-5 shoot out win in the fourth round of the League Cup in November 2018.
