Julian Nagelsmann,The most expensive coach in football history

With Bayern Munich having announced the hiring of Julian Nagelsmann as the coach to replace Hansi Flick, the German is now the most expensive coach in the sport’s history, with the Bavarian giants paying 25 million euros to release him from his RB Leipzig contract,Marca reports.

This overtakes Andre Villas-Boas, who cost Chelsea 15 million euros when they prised him away from Porto in 2011.
Ironically, this isn’t the first time Nagelsmann has been purchased by another club, with RB Leipzig having actually paid Hoffenheim five million euros for his services in 2019.

A knee injury ended his career. At just 19, Nagelsmann’s playing career was ended by a knee injury, with the diagnosis being that if he continued to play the game, he would need an artificial knee by the time he was 40.

“I think I could have made it, I was confident in getting there, if I had to evaluate myself from a coach’s perspective, I think I wouldn’t have been a top player, but I had enough talent to play professional football,” Nagelsmann explained to MARCA.

Tuchel opened the coaching door to the youngster. Going back to 2006, Nagelsmann played for Augsburg with Thomas Tuchel as his coach, and after his knee injury, he was offered the job of a scout with the German club.

“Tuchel was impressed with my work as a scout, that was the first step in my career and I was delighted,” he added.
“I don’t consider him my mentor because our relationship was too pragmatic.”

Nagelsmann won the Under-19 title with Hoffenheim. The newly appointed Bayern Munich coach has only won one trophy to this point and it came at junior level, with his Hoffenheim team winning the Under-19 Bundesliga in 2013/14.

It was this success that encouraged the club to promote him to coach the senior team at the tender age of 28, which makes him the youngest ever coach in the Bundesliga.

He will turn 34 in July and be Bayern Munich’s youngest-ever coach, and at 33 he is the youngest coach to ever reach a Champions League semi-final, as his RB Leipzig team did so in 2019/20.

He saved Hoffenheim after years of punching above their weight in the Bundesliga, Hoffenheim faced a dramatic relegation when they turned to Nagelsmann, in a move that appeared to be very much focused on the future in Bundesliga 2.

Yet, Nagelsmann dragged the team from near relegation to safety, eventually finishing seven points above the relegation zone.

Nagelsmann has actually turned Bayern Munich down before bayern Munich approached Nagelsmann during Pep Guardiola’s time with the club, offering him the role of coaching the club’s B team.

He refused, staying with Hoffenheim, and he would wait for what he described as a ‘logical step’ when RB Leipzig came calling.

Yet, Bayern Munich appears always to have been on his coaching roadmap, confirming that he was in fact going to live in Munich as far back as 2017.

“My wife and son are going to live in Munich, we have family in the city and it’s our home,” he added in an interview with Eurosport.

“I am very happy in my life, but coaching Bayern would make me somewhat happier.”
