Barcelona’s draw against Atletico Madrid wasn’t only a blow to their title hopes but also confirmed their worst season in 13 years.
It will be the worst points tally since the 2007/08 season, when Barcelona only managed to get 64 points. It also established an unprecedented record in the club’s history.
Barcelona have squandered 16 points at home this season due to a lack of consistency, something that hasn’t been seen since the 2003/2004 season, when they lost a total of 21 points at the Camp Nou. Since then, they haven’t exceeded more than 10 points lost at home up until this year.
The Catalan giants have one more home game remaining against Celta Vigo, with two more away games to play against Levante and Eibar.
If Barcelona are to make their dream of lifting the title this year a reality, they must overcome a recent villain of theirs in Levante coach Paco Lopez, who has defeated Barcelona in two of their last three matches against each other at the Estadi Ciutat de Valencia.
Lopez has come out on top in the 2017/18 campaign as Levante ran out 5-4 winners in a thriller, which meant Barcelona would not finish the season unbeaten, as well as in the 2019/20 campaign, when his side beat the Blaugrana 2-1.
If Levante are able to get a point or even a win against Barcelona they will be mathematically safe, but should the Blaugrana win and fail to win against Celta Vigo, the Catalan side will break their record of having a better away record than at home, something that hasn’t happened since 1929.
