Saturday’s LaLiga Santander fixtures did not disappoint in what proved to be a thrilling climax to the 2020/21 season.
Although there are two fixtures remaining on Sunday to finish the season, Saturday saw the LaLiga Santander roll of honour completed.
Atletico Madrid clinched the title with a 2-1 victory at Real Valladolid after going a goal down at half time, which was enough to get them over the line, with Real Madrid winning by the same scoreline at home to Villarreal.
Barcelona finished the season in third place after a 1-0 victory at already-relegated Eibar. With Sevilla taking on Alaves on Sunday evening, these four teams have secured Champions League qualification for next season.
Real Sociedad recorded a 1-0 victory at Osasuna to finish fifth and Real Betis completed a stunning comeback at Celta Vigo, overcoming a 2-0 deficit to triumph 3-2, as these teams qualified for the Europa League.
Whilst Villarreal’s defeat saw them finish seventh and qualify for the Conference League, they could secure Champions League qualification with success in the Europa League final on Wednesday night against Manchester United.
At the bottom of the table, Huesca’s goalless draw with Valencia and Valladolid’s defeat to Atletico Madrid saw them both relegated, whilst Elche survived in dramatic fashion with a 2-0 victory over Athletic Club.
