As Italy trail for the first time in 19 games
Luke Shaw has broken the record for the fastest goal in a European Championship final after giving England the lead against Italy in the final of Euro 2020.
Shaw has been one of England’s standout stars throughout the tournament, but few expected him to pop up and give the Three Lions the lead in the final, let alone inside two minutes.
The 25-year-old opened the scoring with just one minute and fifty seconds on the clock, slamming home an expert cross from Kieran Trippier, who had been recalled to the startling line-up by Gareth Southgate.
Shaw’s goal was his first for England in his 16th international appearance.
He is the first person to score for the Three Lions in the final of a major tournament since Geoff Hurst in 1966.
Meanwhile, Italy going behind in the competition is the first time the Azzurri go behind since Bosnia-Herzegovina 19 games ago.
The Manchester United full-back’s goal means Italy are trailing by a goal for the first time since Edin Dzeko scored the opener of a 1-1 draw in the UEFA Nations League on April 9 in 2020.
Italy are unbeaten in 33 games heading into the Final at Wembley and haven’t conceded more than one goal since France won a friendly 3-1 in June 2018.
