Man City’s £50m Buy-Back Option On Iheanacho Expired Last Season

Leicester City fans have been assured the £50m buy-back option Manchester City inserted into the agreement with the Foxes when Kelechi Iheanacho swapped the Etihad stadium for the King Power stadium for £25m in the summer of 2017 expired at the end of the 2019/20 season.

Foxes’ fans have been over the moon with Iheanacho’s recent form, but many will be wary that his goalscoring form could get the tails of the Premier League’s top clubs wagging, especially the big spending Manchester City.

After their title winning season in the 2015/16 season, the likes of N’golo Kante, Riyad Mahrez and Danny Drinkwater all left the King Power Stadium to join Chelsea and Manchester City, respectively.

And with Iheanacho’s recent form, rumours surfaced that his former club had the option of a buy-back clause worth £50m should the Citizens wish to re-sign the 24-year-old. However, the rumours were squashed soon after. According to sources from the Daily Mail, City’s option to buy-back Iheanacho expired last summer.

Prior to this season, the role of backup striker was a place in the team the Nigerian international forward had become accustomed to as he repeatedly failed to deliver on the promise he showed while at Manchester City.

Since signing for the Foxes in 2017, Iheanacho’s impact on the pitch has left a lot to be desired, making the majority of his appearances from the bench.
However, this season the 24-year-old has become a revelation at the King Power Stadium, scoring 18 goals in all competitions and firing Leicester to their first FA Cup final in 52 years.

Since his FA Cup debut in 2016, Iheanacho has scored more goals in the competition than any other player. He also became the first Nigerian player to score 15 goals in all competitions since the 2015/16 season, aiding the Foxes quest to play Champions League football next season.
