Conte urges Tottenham to remain focused ahead of facing Man Utd

Paris Saint-Germain manager Mauricio Pochettino has admitted he still sees Tottenham as “his club” amid speculation about his future.

The Argentine is one of the favourites for the Manchester United job but appears to still have strong feelings for the team he left in November 2019.

Speaking ahead of PSG’s Champions League clash against Real Madrid on Wednesday evening, Pochettino described the Premier League as “the best league in the world”.

He went on to say: “For me, it [the Spurs job] was an amazing journey, amazing time. I still feel that it’s my club, my place.

“I think when you really feel with the commitment and when you feel the people give everything to try to be successful, and they treat you really, really good how they treat us, it’s impossible to forget that.

“That is why I think Tottenham is always going to be a special club for me.”

Pochettino’s comments will not fill United fans with confidence, as Tottenham are one of their biggest rivals in the race for Champions League qualification.

Spurs are currently seventh in the Premier League but can go above the Red Devils with victory at Old Trafford on Saturday evening.

United are fifth in the table, one point behind Arsenal in fourth having played three games more. Their hopes of a top-four finish are dwindling by the minute.

Most critics accept Pochettino did a brilliant job at Tottenham, despite failing to win a trophy during his five-and-a-half-year spell.

Spurs consistently qualified for the Champions League under the Argentine, reaching the final in 2018-19. He also guided them to second in the Premier League in 2016-17.

Many believe Pochettino will leave PSG in the summer. His team are currently 13 points clear at the top of Ligue 1 and have a decent chance of winning the Champions League.

If Pochettino does accept the United job, he will honour the club’s traditions.

“Always for me it’s about when you arrive at a new club, it’s always about agreeing things and try to decide the best strategy to arrive where you want,” added the Argentine.

“But always building with knowing the culture of the club, knowing how the fans love football, the history of the club to be how they are. This is all really important.

“Of course it’s important to translate your ideas and stick with your ideas and to try to implement your ideas.

“But as a coaching staff to arrive at a club like Tottenham, respecting always the history of the club, respecting the taste of the fans and the culture.

“That, I think for me is the most important thing to start to build what you want. After, you can change small things to feel you are part of the history and philosophy.

“But for me, the most important thing is to design an expectation and philosophy together when you arrive rather than try to arrive and to change everything and say, ‘This is the main idea and if you don’t stick with this it’s impossible to win.'”
