Man Utd transfer news: Scott McTominay surgery announcement could force fourth signing | Football | Sport

Manchester United could be forced into a rethink in the final days of the transfer window after midfielder Scott McTominay confirmed he will face a short spell on the sidelines following surgery. The Scotland international has been forced to address a minor issue in his groin that has been bothering him for several months and United believe now is the right time to resolve the problem with the international break now on the horizon.

McTominay started the opening day of the season thrashing of Leeds before being dropped to the bench in the 1-1 draw at Southampton last Sunday.

Yet now the United academy product has confirmed on his social media that he will miss this weekend’s game against Wolves, as well as Scotland’s World Cup qualifiers against Denmark, Moldova and Austria respectively.

He said on Instagram: “Just to let you all know I’ve had minor surgery on an issue which has needed managing for the last couple of months.

“I hate missing games so to be missing Wolves on the weekend and the international break is so disappointing but that’s part and parcel of the game.

JUST IN: Man Utd boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has view on completing Yves Bissouma transfer

United are already light in central midfield and it’s now clear that the club may consider bringing in another strong addition before the window closes on Tuesday night.

Any move may ultimately hinge on outgoings though and United are struggling to find buyers for a host of first-team players.

Jesse Lingard, Donny van de Beek and Phil Jones are amongst the players who could leave Old Trafford, should the price be right.

Paul Pogba’s long-term future at the club is also in doubt with his contract due to expire at the end of next season.

United have dismissed links to Corentin Tolisso and Aurelien Tchouameni but they are believed to be interest in Declan Rice and Yves Bissouma.

The Brighton man could be available for close to £40m this summer while West Ham would demand up to £100m for Rice.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has already moved to complete the signings of Tom Heaton, Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane but a defensive midfielder would surely make this a near faultless window for the Red Devils.

With Nemanja Matic also ageing, Solskjaer must now reconsider his options, particularly if United struggle in midfield without McTominay when Wolves are in town…
