Max Verstappen absent from Drive to Survive trailer as F1 fans left confused | F1 | Sport

Fans have been left confused and frustrated after reigning world champion Max Verstappen was absent from the Netflix trailer for season six of the hit docuseries Drive to Survive. The Dutchman won a sensational 19 of the 22 Grands Prix in 2023 but didn’t appear once in the teaser released ahead of the launch on 23 February.

The trailer for the latest season of the show opened with shots of Lewis Hamilton, Lando Norris and axed AlphaTauri driver Nyck de Vries, before teasing insight into Lance Stroll’s recovery from injury ahead of the season opener in Bahrain and in-fighting between Alpine team-mates Esteban Ocon and Pierre Gasly.

Crowd favourite Guenther Steiner also made an appearance, while Christian Horner and Daniel Ricciardo also featured with the Drive to Survive stalwarts both expected to be heavily involved in the season six plotlines.

The reason for Verstappen’s absence may stem from his personal distaste for the way in which Netflix producers have portrayed the sport and the rivalries that exist within it. The 26-year-old previously noted: “I understand that it needs to be done to boost the popularity in America. But from my side as a driver, I don’t like being part of it.

“They faked a few rivalries which they don’t really exist. So I decided to not be a part of it and did not give any more interviews after that because then there is nothing you can show. I am not really a dramatic show kind of person, I just want facts and real things to happen.”

The Dutchman is unlikely to feature much when the show arrives on screens later this month, but there will be another way to get inside access to Verstappen’s on-track success, and his life away from the race track when his own personal docuseries is released.

Verstappen’s three-part documentary has been named ‘Off The Beaten Track’, and will premiere on the Viaplay platform on 15 February, making it the perfect companion to the launch of Red Bull’s 2024 challenger – the RB20 – on the same day.

Speaking to about the upcoming release, the reigning champion said: “Partnering with Viaplay for ‘Off the Beaten Track’ has been an incredible journey. This series shows a side that often remains unseen during the moments on the Formula 1 circuit.

“‘Off the Beaten Track’ gives a glimpse of my life, my love for different forms of motorsport and the people who inspire me. I’m proud to collaborate with Viaplay in bringing this unique series to viewers.”
