Providing there are no last-minute surprises, Lionel Messi will make his 767th appearance for Barcelona against Huesca, putting him on the same number as Xavi Hernandez.
He could be in his final months as a Barcelona player, unless he renews his contract, but Messi will make history again and extend the record for appearances made in a Barcelona shirt.
He is also the club’s record goalscorer by some distance, having scored 658 goals to date, compared to the next best being Cesar on 232 goals.
Messi has also played more minutes than anyone, with his 62,447 surpassing Xavi’s 58,675, and won more trophies than anyone with 34, compared to Andres Iniesta’s 32.
Whether he stays or leaves in the summer, Messi has written his name into the history books and newly-elected president Joan Laporta hopes that he will continue to do so for some time.
