NBA: Los Angeles Clippers in talks to sign DeMarcus Cousins

The Los Angeles Clippers are in negotiations with free agent center DeMarcus Cousins over a 10-day contract.

It is hoped that the 30-year-old will come in and compete with Ivica Zubac and Serge Ibaka for the starting spot at the five, while the Clippers want to add depth at the center position ahead of potential playoff matchups against the Los Angeles Lakers, Utah Jazz, Phoenix Suns and Denver Nuggets.

ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski first reported the news about Cousins being in talks with the Clippers, which was then confirmed by the Athletic’s Shams Charania, who noted that the plan is for Cousins to join the Clippers pending approval of the NBA’s health and safety protocols.

The Clippers traded for Rajon Rondo just before the end of the trade deadline, with Lou Williams heading the other way to the Atlanta Hawks, and now Cousins could join them for the remainder of the season.

DeMarcus Cousins previously played for the Houston Rockets this season, averaging 9.6 points and 7.6 rebounds in 25 games before being released. He has yet to return to full health, as he missed most of last season with an ACL injury.

After being released, there were rumours of Cousins potentially returning to the Los Angeles Lakers following Anthony Davis’ injury, but they instead opted to secure the services of Andre Drummond, who agreed a buyout with the Cleveland Cavaliers after the trade deadline.
