Nigeria goalkeeper Maduka Okoye says he is thrilled to be linked with Dutch Eredivie giants, Ajax but insists no contact has been made.
Okoye helped his club, Sparta Rotterdam move further away from the relegation zone at the weekend when he kept a second consecutive clean sheet in his club’s 2-0 defeat of RKC Waalwijk. It was the Nigerian’s seventh clean sheet of the season in 20 games.
“I haven’t heard anything yet, it’s mainly a rumour now,” said Okoye after Sparta’s home win against at the Sparta-stadion “Het Kasteel”.
“It is nice to read that Ajax is interested. That means that I am performing well at Sparta. My focus is now on Sparta. At the moment nothing is playing yet. We will see what will happens.”
Sparta coach Henk Fraser says he will be delighted if Okoye makes a move to Ajax but that will be in the future.
“I would only like that for him, but we still have him now. The reality is that he will be stuck for quite a long time (with us),” Fraser told ESPN about the Nigerian goalkeeper, who has a contract until mid-2022 with an option for another two years.
Okoye will be hoping to make his sixth appearance and keep his second clean sheet for Nigeria in a forthnight when they play against Benin Republic in an African Cup of Nations qualifier.
