Onazi Relishes Debut UEFA Champions League Goal

Nigerian international midfielder Ogenyi Onazi has spoken of his joy at scoring his first UEFA Champions League goal.

Onazi helped fired his Lithuanian club FK Zalgiris Vilnius to a 2-1 win over Linfield on Tuesday night and 5-2 on aggregate having won the first leg 3-1 to progress from the Preliminary Round.

The 28-year old has been impressive for Zalgiris since joining from Danish giants Sonderjyske earlier this year.

Onazi scored his Zalgiris’ second goal in the 44th minute after Saulius Mikoliunas had opened scoring in the 17th minute. Chris Shields scored Linfield’s only goal from a penalty on 66th minute while Zalgiris who had been reduced to 9 men held on to win.

In a chat with Complete Sports on the superb long range strike from outside the box, Onazi said it is the beginning of greater things to come.

“This is just the beginning of greater things to come,” begins the AFCON 2013 winner and World Cup 2014 veteran.

“I am happy to be back 100 percent. This is the reason why I came to Zalgiris to play top class football.

“I’m now ready to move on and to continue from where I stopped previously,” said the former Lazio and Trabzonspor star.

Zalgiris are billed to take on Hungarian side Ferencváros in the second qualifying round of the competition.

Onazi has made 21 appearances for Zalgiris in all competitions scoring three goals and bagging one assist so far in 1,363 minutes of football action.
