Piers Morgan has admitted that Kai Havertz is making him ‘eat his words’ by defying expectations with his recent form for Arsenal. Havertz initially took some time to settle in at the Emirates Stadium and failed to impress many of the club’s supporters with his early performances.
However, the 24-year-old is currently enjoying a rich vein of form and finally looks to have established himself as a key man for the Gunners. He was on target in Arsenal’s thumping five-goal win over Burnley, firing home from close range after beating his marker and working his way into a shooting position.
Havertz’s goal prompted Morgan to change his tune, with the controversial TV personality having been a vocal critic over the last few months. He admitted that he had been wrong about Havertz on X, formerly Twitter, saying: “Great performance, Kai. You’re making a lot of critics, including me, eat our words.”
Morgan also compared Havertz’s impressive goal to the one scored by Diego Maradona against England in 1986, which is widely regarded as one of the best individual strikes in history. He said: “OMG… Kai Havertz has just pulled a mini-Maradona… sensational goal.”
Havertz will be desperate to keep silencing his doubters by letting his football do the talking, with the Germany international having come on leaps and bounds over the last few months. He will need to perform at his best until the end of the season to give Arsenal the best chance of beating Liverpool and Manchester City to the Premier League title.
Speaking after the final whistle against Burnley, Havertz insisted that he was in no mood to rest on his laurels with games coming thick and fast both domestically and in Europe. Arsenal will face Porto in the Champions League knockout stages on Wednesday night before welcoming Newcastle to north London three days later.
“I think we are in a good moment,” he said. We won all of the games so far this year. It feels good but behind all of that was hard work. There are many more hard games to come, the next one’s on Wednesday in another competition.
“We have to continue that hard work. We wanted to start the game very well, we lacked that a bit at West Ham. The early goal was very important for us. We scored another couple of good goals and we’re happy with the win.”
