Benzema – Real Madrid defeated Getafe 2-0 in a Spanish La Liga Santander encounter that was played at the Alfredo Di Stefano Stadium on Tuesday night to further reduce the gap on the table.
With the victory, Madrid which is occupying the second position have further reduced the gap between themselves and Atletico Madrid to five points but the leaders have two games in hand.
Karim Benzema put Los Blancos one goal ahead of Getafe in the 60th minute of the match and his strike came courtesy of an assist from the much-maligned forward, Vinicius Junior.
Vinicius took a touch out wide and then whipped in a Beckham-esque cross from the right, Benzema looked like he was ahead of the ball but slowed his run and connected perfectly to guide it into the right corner.
Ferland Mendy thereafter made it 2-0 in favour of Madrid in the 65th minute of the game when he was set up by Brazilian international and long-serving Los Blancos defender, Marcelo.
bbc.com described Mendy’s goal: “Great goal. Anyone remember the saying ‘follow your pass?’. Ferland Mendy does just that driving forward through midfield and then carrying on to get on the end of Marcelo’s inviting near-post cross.”
