Revealed! Coutinho’s injury setback saves Barcelona 20 million euros

Barcelona – Philippe Coutinho’s injury setback means that the Brazil international is ruled out for the rest of the season and will not reach 100 games with the Blaugrana.

In the event Coutinho managed to do so, the Catalans would have to pay 20 million euros to Liverpool due to a bonus clause included in the deal between the two clubs.

Coutinho has not played a single game since December and has participated in 14 duels this season and in 90 in total for the Blaugrana.

Barcelona spent 120m euros plus another 40m euros in bonuses, from which Liverpool have already received 15m euros, to lure him to Catalonia in 2018.

The COVID-19 outbreak has dealt a great blow to Barcelona, who need to raise money this summer to balance their books and a potential Coutinho departure should not be ruled out.

Barcelona need to reduce their salary cap and they could do so by getting rid of the more than 40m euros they could be due to pay for Coutinho next season as amortisation fees and wages.

To find potential suitors and attract interest from clubs that could afford to meet his salary demands, the Catalans hope to see Coutinho shining in the upcoming Copa America that will kick off in June.
