Sergio Ramos: It would be easier for Haaland to join Madrid than Mbappe

Sergio Ramos has explained that if he was in charge of signing players at Real Madrid, he would opt for Erling Haaland over Kylian Mbappe.

Admittedly, the defender recognised that in an ideal world he would sign them both, but given the financial situation caused by COVID-19 and PSG’s high demands with Mbappe, he believes a move for Haaland would make more sense.

“I would like them both to come, but if one of them were to come, it would be easier to sign Haaland,” Ramos told Ibai Llanos on Twitch.

“With Mbappe the economic circumstances are more difficult. Haaland wouldn’t be bad because of his hunger for goals, his size, his speed… It would be easier to reach an agreement for Haaland.”

Real Madrid have missed an out-and-out goalscorer ever since Cristiano Ronaldo left the club in 2018, which is a departure that Ramos laments.

“Cris lost and Madrid lost [when he left]. I wouldn’t have let him leave because he is one of the best and he would have brought us closer to winning [big trophies],” the defender said.

“These are relationships that have to be for life, it has to be a team fusion. He is a decisive player who helped us win.”

Lionel Messi is a free agent this summer, with his contract at Barcelona set to expire on June 30, so could Ramos see him heading to the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu?

“I would be delighted to welcome Messi [to Real Madrid],” Ramos said with a smile. “I’ll make my house available to him for the first few weeks.

“We had to suffer Leo in his best years, so the fact of not having to face him would be good.

“He would help us win and achieve more success. It would be silly to say otherwise.”

On the other hand, could Ramos join Barcelona when his contract comes to an end this summer?

“There’s no way,” the Real Madrid captain stated.

“I have a special affection for [Joan] Laporta because I like him a lot. But there are things in life that money can’t buy. Just like you wouldn’t see Xavi [Hernandez] or [Gerard] Pique at Madrid…”
