SIMY GUNS FOR OBAFEMI MARTINS’ SERIE A GOAL RECORD, ALSO TARGETS AIYEGBENI’S RECORD

Simeon Nwankwo will be gunning for compatriot, Obafemi Martins’ Serie A goal record when Crotone face Sampdoria today.
Simy netted his 17th goal of the season in Crotone’s 2-1 loss to Udinese in a Serie A game on Saturday.
The goal was his 27th overall in the Serie A across three seasons in 75 appearances for Crotone.
That moved Simy just one goal shy of the 28 goals Martins scored in 88 appearances in the Italian top-flight.
If Simy nets once against Sampdoria today, then he will equal Martins’ record. And a brace will make him the highest scoring Nigerian in the Serie A.
Simy, meanwhile, equalled Yakubu Ayegbeni’s European league mark. And that was with his goal against Udinese in a Serie A game which was played at the weekend.
Thanks to his effort, he has 17 Serie A goals in this campaign, same as Ayegbeni who is Nigeria’s top scorer in a single top-five European League campaign.
Simy has now matched Ayegbeni’s record as Nigeria’s top-scorer in a single season in Europe’s top-5 leagues, the Premier League, Serie A, Bundesliga, Ligue 1 and La Liga.
