Rangers manager Steven Gerrard has shown his support for England star Bukayo Saka after the teenager’s penalty miss handed Euro 2020 glory to Italy last night at Wembley.
Saka stepped up to take the fifth penalty for the Three Lions but saw his effort well saved by Italy keeper and Euro 2020 Player of the Tournament Gianluigi Donnarumma.
After seeing Saka break down in tears after his spot-kick was saved, Gerrard took to Instagram to hail Saka, calling the Arsenal star “so brave” after taking the fifth penalty.
Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford also missed from the spot having come off the bench just a few minutes before the end of extra time, as Southgate gambled on making sure he had plenty of penalty takers available.
However, the likes of Raheem Sterling and Jack Grealish opting out, left the onus on Saka to step up, only for Donnarumma to pull off a big save and secure the Henri Delauney Trophy for the Azzuri.
Gareth Southgate took responsibility for the shootout defeat, saying after the game: “I chose the penalty takers based on what we’ve done in training and nobody is on their own. We’ve won together as a team and it’s absolutely on all of us in terms of not being able to win the game tonight.”
