Verstappen could pose a real challenge to Hamilton’s crown

Verstappen – With the Formula 1 season opener just around the corner, there are growing suggestions that Lewis Hamilton’s crown could be under real threat from Red Bull’s Max Verstappen.

Since joining Mercedes, Hamilton has an almost impeccable record, only not lifting the title in 2013 and 2016.

With Mercedes’ struggles in Bahrain testing recently, however, this could perhaps be Red Bull’s year to finally topple them again.

Verstappen shone in the pre-season testing and eased to the top of the standings.

The Belgian-Dutch driver is still only 23-years-old, but after finishing third in the last two seasons, it looks like he’s ready to step up and really compete for top spot this time around.

The first race of the new season begins on Friday 26 March, with the Grand Prix itself on the Sunday.

It will be interesting to see if Mercedes have learnt from their testing and whether the concerns have been overplayed.

On the other hand, Bahrain presents an opportunity for Max Verstappen to lay down a marker and establish himself as a true contender to Hamilton’s thrown.
