Barcelona presidential candidate Victor Font believes that Xavi Hernandez is the best person to try and convince Lionel Messi to stay at the club.
Most of Font’s campaign has been linked with the arrival of Xavi, and he himself leaned into that notion when asked about Messi.
“Messi has told us that what matters to him to stay is the sporting project,” Font told Radio MARCA.
“In this case, there is no one better to convince him than Xavi Hernandez.”
Font has been planning for this moment for years and understands the gigantic task at hand, as recognised by the sort of transfer dealings that could be expected, with Sergio Aguero tipped as a possible arrival when his contract expires in the summer.
“Taking into account the economic limitations, we have done our homework in terms of signings,” he revealed.
“We want to bring in some players on loan and sign talented players who are at the end of their contracts.”
The Barcagate scandal has dominated the media in Spain and even abroad this week, which the presidential candidate is very disappointed about.
“We are fresh air, the new ones, those who want to change the club’s model,” Font stated.
“What happened this week reaffirms us… Barcelona are being managed as if it were the 1980s.
“When I read the news about Barcagate I felt sad; we have been on the front page all over the world and not for winning the Champions League.”
