Why Eagles will face Benin in Port-Novo

…And not in Cotonou

Port-Novo – The Super Eagles of Nigeria will be meeting the Republic of Benin in today’s 2022 African Cup of Nations qualification match at the Charles de Gaulle Stadium in Port-Novo only because the country’s national stadium, Stade de L’amitie in Cotonou is under repair.

According to an official of the Beninoise Football Federation who failed to disclose his identity, ‘the stadium would have played host to today’s AFCON qualifier between the Squirrels and Nigeria but it is undergoing renovation and won’t be ready in the nearest possible future.’

The Stade de L’amitie which is also known as the Friendship Stadium has a capacity of 20,000 people.

Stade Charles de Gaulle where Nigeria and Benin will clash today is used as the home stadium of AS Dragons FC de l’Oueme and Aiglons FC and has a capacity of 15,000 people.
